Antisemitism - American Jewish Congress - Page 14

Antisemitism has arguably reached new heights in recent years. While Jews have certainly come a long way since the Holocaust, anti-Jewish sentiment is still prevalent across the globe.

As the threat of Islamic extremism spreads across the world and right-wing antisemitic parties gain traction globally, Jews must remain united to fight antisemitism.

Our recent work tackling antisemitism includes...

October 27, 2020 - The two-year anniversary of the Tree of Life massacre

Today marks the two-year anniversary of the Tree of Life Synagogue massacre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history, it took the lives of eleven beloved members of our American Jewish community. Yet it was not only an attack on the local Pittsburgh Jewish community; it was also an attack on America itself. The shooting in Pittsburgh was not an isolated incident. From Brooklyn to Poway and from Monsey to Pittsburgh, we have seen hate, fed by dangerous ideologies, threaten the lives and well-being of all communities, including our Jewish community. And as our country stands at…

October 19, 2020 - JACK ROSEN: America, wake up to the QAnon threat

By Jack Rosen, President of American Jewish Congress Originally published in New York Daily News. Last week, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that QAnon, an anti-Semitic, racist, conspiracy-touting cult, would be banned from all of the social network’s platforms. His step follows passage of a bipartisan U.S. congressional resolution condemning the group. The flurry of activity, while welcome, is not nearly enough. These steps are largely symbolic; it is difficult, if not impossible to police QAnon’s social media presence, and the legislative resolution has no resources or enforcement behind it. In fact, several Republican candidates for Congress who have expressed support for…

October 13, 2020 - Joel Rubin appointed as Executive Director of the American Jewish Congress

American Jewish Congress President Jack Rosen is excited to announce that the organization has hired Joel Rubin to be its next Executive Director. Rubin brings a wealth of both Jewish community and Washington, DC experience to the position, having worked for more than two decades as a Jewish activist, Congressional aide, political advisor, and national security official in both Republican and Democratic administrations. The hiring of Rubin builds upon the storied 102-year-old legacy of the American Jewish Congress as a leader of the American Jewish community. The organization has played a central role in the most significant events impacting both…

October 9, 2020 - American Jewish Congress statement on Borough Park assault

The assault of Jewish Insider journalist Jacob Kornbluh in Borough Park, Brooklyn yesterday was an affront not only to the greater Jewish community but to the American ideals of pluralism and freedom of the press. The context of this assault - protests by the Orthodox Jewish community against necessary public health guidelines that keep New Yorkers safe — is harmful both to the Jewish community and to all Americans. Those in the community who don’t support taking protective measures against the Coronavirus put us all in harm’s way. As American Jews, we have greatly benefitted from the freedoms provided in this wonderful country,…

July 29, 2020 - JEWISH NEWS: Holocaust face-masks condemned as a ‘disgrace’

Originally published in Jewish News. Sick anti-virus masks featuring Holocaust imagery have been condemned as a disgrace”. Website holocaustfacemasks.com is selling the face coverings depicting Shoah victims and Auschwitz’s crematoria. The site says: “Choose from different Holocaust related images and inspire those around you to think for themselves, and question authority. Our goal is to provide a reminder of what can happen when millions of people follow seemingly innocent ‘orders’ and ‘rules’… these images are meant to be reminders of what can happen when tyranny is ignored.” Jack Rosen, president of the American Jewish Congress, said: “Efforts to create false…

July 25, 2020 - American Jewish Congress condemns Rep. Ilhan Omar for invoking antisemitic tropes

The American Jewish Congress condemns Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN-5) for invoking antisemitic tropes in her campaign materials. As she tries to fend off a difficult primary challenge, Rep. Omar attacked Antone Melton-Meaux, her primary opponent, for large donations he has received from donors outside the district, identifying by name only three donors - all of whom are Jewish. By deliberately mentioning only Jewish donors by name, painting Mr. Melton-Meaux as being in their “pocket,” and questioning whether the voters can "trust Melton-Meaux's money," the campaign flyer risks invoking age-old antisemitic myths that wealthy Jews control politicians and the government through money and influence. Rep.…

July 23, 2020 - American Jewish Congress congratulates Spain for adopting IHRA definition

The American Jewish Congress congratulates the Spanish government for adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism. This important definition remains the most comprehensive guideline for spotting, highlighting, and combating antisemitism in public life, media, schools, and in the religious sphere. Spain’s firm stance against hatred of the Jewish people is welcome and crucial in light of the increase in and pervasiveness of antisemitism in Europe and around the world. With this decision, Spain becomes the 26th country to adopt the IHRA working definition of antisemitism. We invite other countries to follow suit and show that they…

June 20, 2020 - WASHINGTON FREE BEACON: The oldest hatred rears its head

Originally published in Washington Free Beacon. It's been more than two days now since the New York Times opinion page, policed closely by the paper's readers and employees for evidence of bigotry, published an op-ed that approvingly cites the black anti-Semitism explained away in a 50-year-old essay by the writer James Baldwin. We've been waiting for the reference to spark some sort of backlash and outcry from the paper’s reporters, for the Twitter hashtag decrying the insensitivity, for the internal finger pointing about who dropped the ball and allowed the publication of a piece that could make American Jews feel so unsafe. Are you…
