New York, NY, August 8, 2022 – As a nation, the brutal killings of four Muslim men in Albuquerque, New Mexico, are not just deeply troubling – but outright unacceptable. In the wake of these deplorable events, the American Jewish Congress expresses our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, and we stand in full solidarity with the Muslim community in New Mexico, and throughout the United States.

Racially motivated violence presents some of the most disturbing patterns in today’s day-and-age. This string of recent killings in New Mexico is abhorrent and unsettling, and the American Jewish Congress urges the local police and the FBI to complete a full investigation, along with providing a total account of the motives and circumstances behind these devastating crimes. These murders have reverberated throughout New Mexico’s Muslim community and beyond – due to the apparent targeting of the victims for their religion and race. This adds another layer of concern for the Muslim community, and other minority groups, at a time when hate crimes in the country are at the highest level in decades. As Americans, we all share a bond that transcends religious affiliation and, today and always, the American Jewish Congress supports the safety and security of our nation’s Muslim population.

Once again, the American Jewish Congress reiterates its strong repudiation of hate and violence – whether it is antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, or any other expression targeting minorities. Moreover, it is critically important that the culprits who are responsible for these tragedies in New Mexico are brought to swift justice – and that the safety and security of New Mexico’s Muslim community get the full care and attention they deserve.
