The Gaza-based terror group Hamas has been caught with evidence of at least some of the Israeli hostages inside, and with tunnels beneath, the Al-Shifa, the largest hospital in the enclave, capping a drama that lasted several days where the terror group and its sympathizers did their best to divert the international attention by using patients and refugees in the hospital as human shields.

This major story – broken by Israeli authorities around 48 hours ago – is a huge setback to Hamas disinformation war. But it is not getting the international attention it deserves because it has been overtaken by the humanitarian situation of Gazans displaced because of Hamas’ reckless actions. The unfolding U.S.-brokered talks to release Israeli hostages have also overshadowed this development.

But the smoking gun on Hamas using patients and medical staff at Gaza’s largest hospital – and potentially other hospitals in the Strip – is a huge story. It certainly deserves the attention of U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres, U.N. Human Rights Chief Volker Türk, U.N. Undersecretary General for Political And Peacebuilding Rosemary DiCarlo, and the Commissioner-General of the U.N. agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) Philippe Lazarini.

The information about Hamas using Gaza’s hospital for terrorism and its patients as human shields was mocked by Israel-skeptics and Hamas-sympathetic lobbies for weeks. But the latest discovery proves that the Israel Defense Force (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency (ISA) were right. The U.S. intelligence had also indicated that Hamas was up to no good in and around Palestinian hospitals across Gaza but specifically at the Al-Shifa hospital.

The biggest shocker out of this development is the likelihood that a handful or maybe more of the medical staffers at Al-Shifa Hospital had knowledge that Hamas was moving at least some of the Israeli civilian hostages through the hospital, but they kept silent and failed to alert the U.N., the international media, and the Israeli authorities, most likely for fear of retaliation by Hamas. Is it possible that they were complicit with Hamas in the detention of kidnapped Israeli civilians? There is no clear answer to this, and it depends on how many knew and willfully concealed the information from the many international NGOs and the media they have been in contact with after Oct. 7. What is indisputable is that Hamas did wrong by using the hospital as a potential hiding place and willfully endangered the facility, the patients, the medical staff, and the displaced taking refuge there. This can be investigated as a possible war crime.
