New York, NY, October 18, 2023 – The leadership of the American Jewish Congress, including Jack Rosen, President; Dr. Munr Kazmir, Vice President; Daniel Rosen, Vice Chair; Dr. Ben Chouake, Secretary; Michael Melnicke, Treasurer, released today the following statement:
“The American Jewish Congress strongly commends Governor Kathy Hochul of New York for her bold and heartfelt wartime visit to Israel, a profound and sincere gesture of solidarity during a time of immense challenge.
This pivotal moment in history necessitates courageous leadership, and Governor Hochul’s decision to visit Israel, especially in the midst of an ongoing conflict, is a reflection of her unwavering commitment to the Jewish State and the broader Jewish community. Governor Hochul, in doing so, joins President Biden and several congressional leaders who have, in a bipartisan fashion, travelled to Israel in this time of need.
Importantly, Governor Hochul’s visit underscores the deep and enduring bond between the State of New York, home to the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, and the State of Israel. Her poignant remarks about the global implications of the conflict, stating that “the attacks halfway across the world feel deeply personal to New Yorkers,” resonate deeply with the Jewish community, many of whom have close ties to the land of Israel.
At the same time, we are deeply grateful for Governor Hochul’s leadership in assembling a bipartisan coalition of state leaders to unequivocally express solidarity with Israel and condemn the terror attacks by Hamas. Additionally, her proactive measures – from her interactions with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, participation in vigils supporting Israel, illuminating landmarks in the colors of the Israeli flag, to denouncing the deplorable anti-Israel and antisemitic rally in Times Square – have served to reassure the Jewish community, which remains considerably under stress and under the threat of increased antisemitic attacks.
At a time when many in the world watch and wait, we need, more than ever, leaders who rise, make bold decisions, and demonstrate unyielding support where it matters the most. We at the American Jewish Congress are immensely proud of Governor Hochul’s actions and feel assured that the bonds between America and Israel remain strong and unbreakable.“
