New York, NY, September 5, 2023 – The American Jewish Congress would like to congratulate President Joe Biden for the nomination of former Secretary Jack Lew as the next U.S. Ambassador to Israel.

Jack Rosen, President of the American Jewish Congress, congratulates Secretary Lew on his nomination: Jack Lew has served our nation well in different capacities and roles, and he is more than well-prepared and well-equipped to serve as America’s top diplomat in Jerusalem. Having known him for many years, I am proud to call him a personal friend.

Jack Lew’s passion and commitment to the U.S.-Israel relationship will be key to navigating the shared challenges and threats that both nations face, and to elevating the ties that bind the United States with our closest Middle East ally to new heights. Moreover, his experience in economic and public diplomacy will be pivotal to advancing broader regional peace, especially as we see new pathways towards Israel’s normalization with the Arab and Muslim world, on the back of the historic Abraham Accords.”

Former Ambassador Tom Nides, a dear friend of our organization, fervently advocated for a strong U.S.-Israel relationship, even in light of challenges and normal disagreements between allies. His tenure in Israel was greatly successful and he left behind an important legacy. We trust that Secretary Lew is an excellent choice to succeed him and, once confirmed, will be able to continue that good work further.

The American Jewish Congress looks forward to Secretary Lew’s swift and unanimous confirmation and urges the U.S. Senate to take his nomination into consideration at the earliest possible time. Israel is the United States’ closest friend and ally and, considering that the Middle East is at a critical juncture, our country’s top diplomatic representation there is more important than ever.
