Jewish American Group Shows Solidarity With British Muslims Amid Riots

August 9, 2024, New York, NY – The American Jewish Congress is following with deep concern and unequivocal condemnation the recent anti-Muslim riots in the United Kingdom. These acts of hate are not only a direct assault on the Muslim community but also an affront to the very values of tolerance, respect, and democracy that we hold dear.

As a community that has been continuously targeted by hate-filled extremists, Jews understand all too well the violent consequences of hate speech and the demonization of minorities. The attacks on innocent Muslim civilians and mosques must be immediately repudiated by everyone. The Jewish community stands in full solidarity with the Muslim community and condemns in the strongest terms its scapegoating.

We must recognize that these riots are not isolated incidents but are fueled by a dangerous undercurrent of bigotry that requires a collective stand against hate, in all its forms. We have seen this phenomenon not only in the United Kingdom but also more broadly in Europe and in the United States, with the surge in antisemitism and Islamophobia.

It is incumbent upon everyone – community leaders, politicians, and citizens alike – to  come together to foster understanding and solidarity, and most importantly to reject the toxic ideologies and disinformation that threaten the fabric of our democratic societies.
