April 14, 2025, New York, NY – The American Jewish Congress is outraged and deeply disturbed by the violent arson attack on the residence of Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania. We unequivocally condemn and deplore all forms of political violence. To violently target a governor, his family, and his home is an attack not only on their individual safety, but on the very foundations of American democracy.

This was not just a senseless act of violence. It was a targeted assault on a public official, a Jewish leader, and a man of deep moral conviction. The suspect, now charged with multiple felonies including attempted murder and terrorism, admitted to harboring hatred toward Governor Shapiro and stated his intent to harm him.

This horrible attack was made even more disturbing by the fact that it occurred while the Governor and his family were asleep following a Passover Seder, leading many to question the likelihood that it was motivated by antisemitic sentiments. Governor Shapiro, one of the highest-ranking Jewish elected officials in the country, has consistently stood for principle, for justice, and for the Jewish community.

Unfortunately, the attack on Governor Shapiro is not an isolated case of political violence, as we have seen a surge in violent threats against politicians in recent years. With antisemitism rising across the nation, and an increasingly hostile environment facing Jews in America today, where public figures are demonized for their faith, Jewish politicians face an even more consternating reality.

The American Jewish Congress stands in full solidarity with Governor Shapiro and his family. We are grateful for their safety and for the swift and professional response of law enforcement.
