New York, NY, November 15, 2023 – The “March for Israel” held yesterday in Washington, D.C., stands as an unprecedented and historic demonstration of unity, strength, and solidarity among hundreds of thousands of American Jews and pro-Israel advocates. With almost 300,000 people present, this march truly amplified the Jewish community’s collective voice and stands as a testament to our resilience and determination.
By all accounts, this historic gathering not only marked the largest pro-Israel assembly but also became the largest Jewish gathering in U.S. history. This is a Jewish response of epic proportions, both to the existential threat facing Israel following the horrific terror attack by Hamas on October 7th, as well as to the exponential rise in antisemitic attacks and rhetoric here in America and abroad. The Jewish community will not be deterred, will not be silenced, and will never cease to stand with Israel and our brothers and sisters around the world.
The deeply emotional and moving testimonies of participants, including those from non-Jewish backgrounds, illustrate the event’s profound impact. Political leaders, community activists, and individuals from different facets of the American society expressed their solidarity with Israel and the Jewish people, shared grief for the victims, and viscerally called for the release of the over 240 hostages that are still being held in Gaza by the Hamas terrorists.
This monumental event, organized within a matter of weeks, echoes the spirit of unity that characterized marches in support of Soviet Jewry in 1987 and even earlier demonstrations, like those in 1933, when we mobilized against the Nazi threat in Europe. The evil that we are facing nowadays brings back the darkest fears; however, as it was reiterated yesterday more forcefully than ever, in unity we will prevail.
