The American Jewish Congress applauds the decision of German government to designate Hezbollah a terrorist organization and ban its activities on German soil.
For far too long Hezbollah has been allowed to continue its operations due to a farcical differentiation made between the organization’s political wing and military wing. By banning Hezbollah’s military wing but allowing its political wings, the European Union and many European countries allow Hezbollah to continue its propaganda, as well to operate assets and find sources of revenue for financing nefarious activities. Germany’s decisive actions are a clear refutation of this artificial differentiation.
Hezbollah’s terrorist activities in Europe and around the world are a direct threat to peace and security. We urge other European countries and the European Union to join Germany in dropping the distinction between Hezbollah’s various wings and taking action against all its operations.
