New York, NY, October 7, 2023 – The American Jewish Congress strongly condemns Hamas’ heinous terrorist attack and declaration of war. We are deeply angered by Hamas’ unprovoked cowardly act, which has claimed so far 40 innocent lives and has left hundreds more injured. As we speak, not only Hamas has launched thousands of rockets into Israel, but it also infiltrated Israeli border towns with an unknown number of ground fighters, kidnapping dozens of Israeli civilians.

In light of this act of aggression, the most severe escalation since May 2021, we unequivocally stand with Israel and its inherent right and duty to safeguard its citizens and ensure their security. The continued acts of terror from groups like Hamas underscore the dire challenges Israel faces daily. We unequivocally support Israel’s right to take necessary measures to protect its people and to deter future attacks, including all necessary steps to neutralize Hamas leadership and militants.

The American Jewish Congress calls upon the international community to unite in condemning this abominable act and to hold those responsible accountable. We urge all nations to stand firm against terrorism and to work together in ensuring that such extremist ideologies and acts are eradicated. The international community must recognize the constant threat under which the people of Israel live and rally in support of Israel’s pursuit of peace and security.

Hamas’ acts of terror have no place in a civilized world, and they directly undermine the aspirations of those seeking a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. By resorting to violence and terror, Hamas not only inflicts harm upon innocent civilians but also irreparably damages the prospects for dialogue and reconciliation. We stand in solidarity with the victims and their families, and we pray for the quick recovery of those injured.

The American Jewish Congress remains steadfast in its commitment to Israel’s security and well-being and we call on our friends and partners to join us today in standing with Israel.
