Summary

Ruben Gallego, born in 1979, is currently serving as the junior U.S. Senator from Arizona, having assumed office on January 3, 2025.

Prior to his Senate tenure, he served as the U.S. Representative for Arizona’s 7th congressional district from 2015 to 2025. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Gallego served in Iraq and has been recognized for his advocacy on veterans’ issues. He holds a B.A. in International Relations from Harvard University.

In the Senate, Gallego serves on several committees, including the Armed Services Committee, the Foreign Relations Committee, and the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

Below is Senator Gallego’s voting record and public positions on issues important to the Jewish community. 

Senator Gallego has consistently advocated for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He co-sponsored H.Res.326, which expressed the sense of the House of Representatives that only a two-state solution can ensure Israel’s survival as a secure Jewish and democratic state. 

Gallego has opposed the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. He co-sponsored H.Res.246, which opposes efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel and the global BDS movement targeting Israel.

In May 2024, Gallego voted in favor of the Antisemitism Awareness Act (H.R. 6090), which directs the Department of Education to consider the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism when investigating discrimination complaints.

Senator Gallego has supported continued U.S. security assistance to Israel. He co-introduced the United States-Israel Anti-Tunnel Cooperation Enhancement Act, which provides $80 million annually to scale up U.S.-Israel anti-tunnel cooperation.

Senator Gallego has expressed support for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran Nuclear Deal. In 2015, he joined other Democrats in supporting the agreement, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
