    • Summary

    Patrick Leahy was born in 1940 and is currently serving as the senior United States Senator from Vermont. Senator Leahy’s seat will be up for election in 2022.

    First elected in 1974 and reelected since, Senator Leahy is currently the most senior member of the U.S. Senate. He held the position of President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate from 2012 until 2015, receiving also the title of President pro tempore emeritus in January 2015. Leahy is the current dean of Vermont’s congressional delegation. Prior to joining the Senate, he served as a State Attorney for Chittenden County.

    Patrick Leahy is the Ranking Member on the Appropriations Committee. He also serves on the Judiciary Committee; the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee; and the Rules and Administration Committee.

    Below is Senator Leahy’s voting record and public positions on issues important to the Jewish community. 

    Senator Leahy supported the Iran nuclear deal. In 2019, he voted against the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things strengthens Israel’s security, and allows a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.
