Marsha Blackburn was born in 1952 and is currently serving as the junior United States Senator from Tennessee. Senator Blackburn was elected in 2018 and her seat will be up for election in 2024.
Prior to becoming a U.S. Senator, she served as a U.S. Representative for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District. After having served in the Tennessee Senate from 1999, Blackburn was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2003. In the House, Blackburn served on the majority and minority whip teams. She was continuously reelected in the House until 2018, when she decided to run for the U.S. Senate seat.
Senator Blackburn is currently serving on the Armed Services Committee; the Judiciary Committee; the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee; and the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
Below is Senator Blackburn’s voting record and public positions on issues important to the Jewish community.
As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Blackburn opposed the Iran nuclear deal. She supported the move of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem. Senator Blackburn supported the Taylor Force Act, which states that no American governmental funds shall be given to a Palestinian entity that financially rewards terrorists or their families.
She cosponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act, a bill that aimed to fight discriminatory boycotts that target Israel.
In 2018, Senator Blackburn cosponsored the United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act, a legislation that supported full funding of security assistance to Israel as outlined in the 2016 U.S.-Israel Memorandum of Understanding.
In 2019, she voted for the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things, strengthened Israel’s security and allowed a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.
