Summary

Eric Schmitt was born in 1975 and is currently serving as the junior United States Senator from Missouri. His seat will be up for election in 2028.

A member of the Republican Party, Eric Schmitt was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022, replacing retiring Senator Roy Blunt. Prior to that, Schmitt served as the 43rd Missouri Attorney General (from 2019 to 2023). Between 2005 to 2008, Schmitt was an alderman for Glendale, Missouri. He served as member of the Missouri Senate from 2009 to 2017, representing the 15th district. In 2016, Schmitt was elected Missouri state treasurer. On November 13, 2018, Governor Mike Parson named Schmitt attorney general of Missouri after the incumbent, Josh Hawley, was elected to the United States Senate. In November 2020, Schmitt was elected to a full four-year term as attorney general.

Below is Senator Eric Schmitt’s voting record and public positions on issues important to the Jewish community.

Senator Schmitt joined other Senate Republicans in a letter supporting Israel amid the war started on October 7, 2023, by Hamas and called for the freezing of Iranian funds, underlining Israel as the U.S.’s strongest democratic ally in the Middle East and criticizing Iran for its efforts to destroy Israel.

Although he expressed support for security aid to Israel, Senator Schmitt voted against the National Security Act in February 2024, which included $14 billion aid to Israel. Senator Schmitt argued that “each of the funding requests should be separate to allow for individual debate and review.”

Furthermore, Senator Schmitt supported a resolution that aimed to condemn antisemitism and embrace the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism.

In a display of bipartisan support for Israel, Schmitt joined nearly all other members of the Senate in supporting a resolution that reaffirmed the U.S.-Israel alliance and the commitment to stand with Israel.

As Attorney General of Missouri, Schmitt launched an investigation on whether the financial research firm Morningstar Inc violated state law aimed at protecting Israel from antisemitic Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) activities.
