Alex Padilla was born in 1973 and is currently serving as the junior United States Senator from California. Senator Padilla’s seat is up for election in 2028.
Padilla was appointed in the U.S. Senate in 2021, after then-Senator Kamala Harris was elected Vice President of the United States. A member of the Democratic Party, Padilla served as the 32nd secretary of state of California from 2015 to 2021.Prior to that, Padilla served more than seven years on the Los Angeles City Council, representing the 7th district. First elected in 1999, he was the president of the Los Angeles City Council from 2001 to 2006. He then served in the California State Senate for the 20th district from 2006 to 2014.
Padilla is currently serving on the Judiciary Committee, the Budget Committee, and the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. He also serves on the Environment and Public Works Committee and the Rules and Administration Committee.

Senator Padilla signed a letter voicing support for providing Israel with $500 million in funding for the Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Arrow 3 missile-defense programs.
In the Senate, Padilla voted in favor of legislation that provided funding to replenish Israel’s Iron Dome air-defense system.
During a trip to Israel, Senator Padilla visited Yad Vashem and said that he was “inspired by the resilience of the Jewish people, and committed to peace, security, and prosperity in the region and world.”
In regards to Iran and its proxies in the Middle East, he stated that “as an Iran-backed proxy, Hezbollah is also a threat to U.S. interests and allies in the region.”
