Adam Schiff, who is Jewish, was born in 1960 and is currently serving as the junior U.S. Senator from California, having assumed office on January 3, 2025.
Prior to his Senate tenure, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 to 2025, representing California’s 28th congressional district. Schiff is known for his work on national security, intelligence, and foreign policy issues. He gained national prominence as the lead impeachment manager during President Donald Trump’s first impeachment trial.
In the Senate, Schiff serves on several committees, including the Committee on Foreign Relations; the Committee on Intelligence; and the Committee on the Judiciary.
Below is Senator Adam Schiff’s voting record and public positions on issues important to the Jewish community.
Senator Schiff has consistently expressed strong support for Israel’s security and the U.S.-Israel alliance. He advocates for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, emphasizing the importance of a negotiated settlement that ensures peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians. In February 2025, Schiff stated that while a two-state solution may be “unpopular” in Israel, he hoped that when “not just a sense of security by Israelis but a reality of security has been restored, we can once again think about what a future can look like.”
In 2025, Senator Schiff co-sponsored the Antisemitism Awareness Act (S.558), which directs the Department of Education to consider the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism when investigating discrimination complaints.
Schiff supports continued U.S. security assistance to Israel. He has emphasized the strategic partnership between the two nations and the importance of Israel’s security in Middle Eastern stability.
As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Schiff co-sponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act, which aimed to direct U.S. federal entities to oppose boycotts against Israel.
Senator Schiff has been a vocal supporter of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran Nuclear Deal. In 2015, he endorsed the agreement, stating that it “realistically precludes” Tehran from developing a nuclear bomb for 15 or more years. He criticized the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw from the deal, calling it a “mistake of historic proportions.”
