Position: U.S. Representative ( KY-4 )
Party Affiliation: REP
U.S. Representative Thomas Massie has sparked controversy over associations with and defenses of prominent antisemites and Holocaust deniers, as well as for engaging in rhetoric widely criticized as antisemitic and taking strongly anti-Israel positions.
Thomas Massie was born in 1971 and is currently serving as the U.S. representative for Kentucky’s 4th congressional district.
Rep. Massie has been serving in this position since 2012, when he won the special and general elections. Prior to joining Congress, he served as Judge-Executive of Lewis County, Kentucky. An engineer by profession, Massie was also the founder of a startup company based in Massachusetts.
U.S. Representative Thomas Massie has a history of making controversial remarks and has voted repeatedly against continued U.S. security aid to Israel.
In May 2026, Rep. Massie lost his Republican primary to challenger Ed Gallrein. In his concession speech, Massie took a dig at Gallrein’s purported relationship to Israel, saying, “I would’ve come out sooner, but I had to call my opponent and concede. And it took a while to find Ed Gallrein in Tel Aviv.”
In the closing days of the May 2026 primary campaign, Rep. Massie repeatedly framed the race in terms widely criticized as invoking antisemitic tropes. He claimed the primary was “a referendum on whether the Israeli lobby can buy a seat in Kentucky” and introduced the “AIPAC Act,” demanding that the pro-Israel group, and other interest groups supporting other countries, register as foreign agents — a longtime talking point by the congressman that critics said leaned into antisemitic dual-loyalty tropes.
In 2024, Massie called for ending all U.S. military aid to Israel.
In December 2023, at the height of Israel’s war against Hamas, Rep. Massie shared a social media post implying that Congress was not interested in “American patriotism” but was interested in “Zionism.” That same month, Massie was the only Republican and one of only 14 members to vote against a resolution strongly condemning the drastic rise of antisemitism in the United States and around the world.
In November 2023, Massie was the only member of Congress to vote against a resolution reaffirming the State of Israel’s right to exist. That same month, he was also the only Republican to vote against the No Funds for Iranian Terrorism Act, the only Republican and one of 23 members to vote against a resolution condemning the support of Hamas, Hezbollah, and other terrorist organizations at institutions of higher education, and the only Republican to vote against the Hamas and Other Palestinian Terrorist Groups International Financing Prevention Act, a bill that would impose sanctions on terrorist organizations.
In October 2023, in the aftermath of the Hamas terror attack in Israel on October 7, Rep. Massie was the only Republican member that voted against congressional bipartisan non-binding resolution H. Res. 771. The resolution stated that the House of Representatives “stands with Israel as it defends itself against the barbaric war launched by Hamas and other terrorists” and “reaffirms the United States’ commitment to Israel’s security” and it was passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.
In May 2022, Rep. Massie was the only member of the House of Representatives, from both parties, to against a resolution honoring Jewish Americans’ heritage and denouncing a rise in antisemitic violence.
In September 2021, he was the sole Republican that voted against the Iron Dome Supplemental Appropriations Act, passed overwhelmingly in the U.S. House of Representatives, and that provided funding for replenishing Israel’s air defense system.
