The American Jewish Congress welcomes the firm pro-Israel position of the 2020 Democratic platform.
The policy paper – which lays out the party’s positions for the next four years and was unanimously approved by the drafting committee – expresses a deep commitment to the U.S.-Israel alliance. The draft supports Israel’s security and President Obama’s 2016 Memorandum of Understanding with Israel which provides our ally with $3.8 billion in security aid over 10 years. Importantly, it directly opposes the delegitimization of Israel at the United Nations and the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement which singularly targets Israel.
As a testament to the steadfast bipartisan support for Israel, it is critical that the platforms of both parties include a strong emphasis on the U.S.-Israel alliance. While some activists and groups have been advocating for softening the Democratic party’s stance on Israel, the pre-approved and widely-supported language demonstrates that such efforts have failed to change the party’s pro-Israel consensus.
The final platform is expected to be confirmed by the full committee in the upcoming days and unveiled at the Democratic party’s convention in August. We look forward to seeing the draft of the Democratic platform approved in its current state.
