Andrew Cuomo<\/strong>\u00a0joined the legal team defending Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from war crime charges.

Zohran Mandani\u00a0<\/strong>vowed to arrest Netanyahu if he stepped foot in New York City.

Cuomo,<\/strong>\u00a0the front-runner in the mayoral race, is on a redemption tour boosted by donors who support Israel, has gone to lengths to portray antisemitism as a leading issue and deemed himself a \u201chyper aggressive supporter of Israel and proud of it.\u201d

Mamdani,\u00a0<\/strong>the democratic socialist Assemblymember polling in second place, would be the city\u2019s first Muslim mayor and has accused Israel of committing an American-funded genocide in Gaza.

That juxtaposition<\/strong>\u00a0underscores the degree to which Middle East politics is shaping the contest for a job with more oversight of potholes and trash collection than international conflict.

The city is home<\/strong>\u00a0to the world\u2019s largest Jewish population outside Israel and the biggest Muslim contingent in the Western Hemisphere. Pro-Israel donors have been spending to shape New York elections in their favor, following the energized movement that took root on college campuses across the city in response to the Israel-Hamas war. And hate crimes against both Jews and Muslims are on the rise in New York City.

Against that backdrop,<\/strong>\u00a0the diametrically opposed candidates are leaning into thorny global politics, hoping their strong stances will help drive voters to the polls.

\u201cIt\u2019s a litmus test<\/strong>\u00a0for different constituencies,\u201d said David Greenfield, a former City Council member and Orthodox Jew who leads an anti-poverty nonprofit. He described the \u201cpro-Israel constituency\u201d as New Yorkers focused on law and order and business growth, and the \u201canti-Israel constituency\u201d as wary of police and generally anti-establishment. \u201cIt\u2019s really a reflection of how polarized the political moment is.\u201d

For Jewish candidates<\/strong>\u00a0Brad Lander and Scott Stringer, the Israel-Gaza war poses a trickier dynamic, as they represent bases who are critical of the Netanyahu regime but sensitive to rhetoric opposing Israel.

Lander and Mamdani<\/strong>\u00a0are planning to attend a \u201cSeder in the Streets\u201d tonight with the lefty group The Jewish Vote, which co-endorsed them.
