Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who is Jewish, demanded that Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) apologize for calling him \u201cFuhrer,\u201d a term that is associated with Adolf Hitler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talking to reporters outside the Senate chamber, Moreno said that \u201cRepublicans are independently minded. Democrats are monolithic sheep that follow the Fuhrer Schumer\u2019s orders,\u201d Reuters<\/em> reported<\/a>. (JNS sought comment from Moreno.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat Sen. Moreno did was absolutely despicable. It\u2019s antisemitic, plain and simple. It\u2019s outrageous,\u201d Schumer said. \u201cI lost lots of people in the Holocaust to Hitler, and for him to use those words, first we demand he apologize immediately but we also demand that his Republican colleagues start denouncing him on something that is so blatantly antisemitic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO and national director of the Anti-Defamation League, called<\/a> Moreno\u2019s remarks \u201cdespicable and inexcusable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American Jewish Congress stated<\/a> that \u201chistory is not a punchline\u201d and that the senator\u2019s remarks were both \u201cdistasteful\u201d and \u201cneedlessly provocative and deeply wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February, Republican leaders in the Minnesota state Senate sought<\/a> an apology from Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz\u2014the former Democratic vice presidential candidate\u2014for saying that the country is being \u201cstolen by fascists and Nazis.\u201d Walz said that he wasn\u2019t calling Republicans \u201cNazis.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
