The American Jewish Congress continues to closely monitor American politics, candidate platforms, and elected officials\u2019 positions on Jewish issues. While remaining nonpartisan and without endorsing candidates, we constantly work to keep Jewish voters informed and engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New York City mayoral race is highly significant for its large Jewish community. Last week, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his candidacy, highlighting his longstanding commitment to combating antisemitism. The American Jewish Congress applauds Governor Cuomo\u2019s strong stance against antisemitism and his longstanding support for Israel. We particularly value his clear message that \u201cnothing justifies racism and antisemitism\u201d and that \u201cthe law must be aggressively enforced\u201d to protect Jewish New Yorkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayor Eric Adams has also been a vocal advocate against antisemitism. In contrast, several Democratic primary opponents have downplayed the need to address anti-Jewish hate and prejudice and unfairly criticized Israel. Alarmingly, some, including Comptroller Brad Lander and State Rep. Zohran Mamdani, have been members and supporters of the antisemitic, anti-Israel Democratic Socialists of America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We trust Governor Cuomo\u2019s campaign will foster a robust and meaningful discussion with the other candidates on the most effective ways for New York to confront this growing threat. It is clear that his staunch support for the Jewish community and Israel distinguishes Governor Cuomo from some of the other Democratic primary opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a microcosm of the broader challenges facing the nation, New York\u2019s leadership experience is directly applicable to some of the most critical challenges we face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
