Former NC Gov. Pat McCrory trails in a distant second place at 16 percent. The only other Republican in the race to notch double-digit support is former Rep. Mark Walker, who sits at about 12 percent support. For Democrats, the presumption about who will win the primary becomes much clearer, with Former NC Supreme Court Cheif Justice Cheri Beasly leading in the polls consistently since November.

Given the playing field, here are some profiles to help display how the race for the NC Senate will impact our Jewish communities:

GOP Primary

Ted BUDD – The current front runner in the GOP primary is Theodore “Ted” Budd, a current member of the U.S. House of Representatives – serving the people of North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District. Originally elected to office in 2017, Rep. Budd has been a consistent supporter of the State of Israel and a vocal advocate of holding Iran accountable. On May 4th, Rep. Ted Budd joined a bipartisan letter to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense requesting funding for U.S.-Israel missile defense programs like the Iron Dome. Rep. Budd has also fought to thwart antisemitic activities, calling out antisemitic teachings at the University of North Carolina and co-introducing the Israel Anti-Boycott Act; a bill clearly that establishes that Congress opposes the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. While Rep. Budd shares an impressive record on issues of significant importance affecting the Jewish Community, he hasn’t checked every box. Rep. Budd did vote NAY the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, which passed 364-62. This bill included provisions for the Department of Justice to facilitate expedited reviews of hate crimes and require the DOJ to issue guidance to law enforcement agencies to establish online hate crime reporting processes. With the evident rise of antisemitism and In the wake of tragic events like the Buffalo Massacre and Orange County Church Shooting, one can see how valuable something like this legislation truly is.

Rep. Budd has been endorsed by Former President Donald Trump, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, and U.S. Reps. Jim Jordan and Elise Stefanik, Lt. Governor Mark Robinson, and organizations like the Club for Growth, among others.

Pat McCrory- Pat McCrory has been a serious contender for the open NC Senate Seat’s GOP Nomination. Having served as Governor of North Carolina from 2013 to 2017, Governor McCrory is the only candidate in the GOP primary to have won a statewide election in North Carolina so far. While Governor, McCrory worked to eradicate BDS in his state, and the former Governor continues to exercise a positive relationship with North Carolina Jewish Communities. Jeff Epstein, the former president of Charlotte’s Jewish Community Relations Council and who later went on to be Governor McCrory’s Secretary of Revenue, said that “[Israel] made a very big impression on [Governor McCrory]. I think in his gut he feels a lot of affinity for Israel because it has had so many practical successes.” Epstein followed by saying, “And as far as Jewish community goes, I think Pat is an admirer of people who get things done, and he admires Jewish people for being so community-minded.” When Governor McCrory was asked by Jewish Insider about his views on Israel and antisemitism today, McCrory said he “absolutely” supports more funding for Iron Dome, Israel’s missile-defense system, and for extra security at Jewish institutions in America.

Governor McCrory has been endorsed by notable figures like Former presidential candidate and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Maryland Governor Larry Hogan.

Mark Walker- Former Representative Mark Walker has taken steps to re-enter public service, this time with the hopes of reaching Congress’ upper chamber. Originally elected to Congress in 2015 – Walker represented the people of Greensborough until 2021. During his tenure in Congress and highlighted by the Jewish Insider, “Walker co-sponsored the bipartisan United States-Israel Cooperation and Regional Security Act and a House resolution denouncing efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel and the Global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement.” Walker favored Former President Trump’s 2018 decision to exit the Iran Deal, and the Former Congressman has continued to levy intense criticism over the Iranian regime’s activities. In an interview with Jewish Insider, Walker also highlighted his support for boosting federal funds to protect Jewish institutions in the face of rising antisemitism. In addition, in that same interview, Walker noted that white supremacist groups need to be condemned outright.

Walker maintains a significant congressional network, with notable endorsements from individuals like Rep. Madison Cawthorn and Rep. Kevin Brady and U.S. Senators such as Tim Scott and James Lankford. Walker has also been afforded former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee’s support.

Democratic Primary

Cheri Beasly- The Honorable Cheri Beasly leads the Democratic charge in the fight for North Carolina’s open Senate Seat. Having been first appointed in 1999 as a Judge for North Carolina’s 12th Judicial Circut, Judge Beasly has championed moderate thinking and is working to become the State’s first African American Senator. After her tenure in the 12th Circut, Judge Beasly was later appointed to the North Carolina Court of Appeals, a post she held until 2012. Following that, Cheri Beasly was appointed by the bench of North Carolina’s Highest Court – serving as an associate Justice on the Supreme Court from 2012 to 2019 and Cheif Justice from 2019 to 2020. Before Beasly became a Judge, she was an Assistant Public Defender for the 12th Circut, as well.

Given her legal background – the majority of which includes time as a non-partisan Judge, not very much information surrounding Beasly’s views on Jewish Issues is available. However, she has been endorsed by organizations like the Jewish Democratic Council of America, who say that Beasly: “Strongly supports Israel’s security and the two-state solution, noting that she supports unconditional U.S. aid to Israel and opposes the BDS movement. She [also] supports reentry to the JCPOA and future negotiations regarding Iran’s other nefarious behavior.”

Conclusion

It is clear that this race will craft a significant impact on the direction of U.S. Policy. As noted by The Hill, “The winner will replace retiring U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, making the swing-state seat among the most competitive in the country, as the race to watch if Democrats want to hold onto their majority in Congress. Whether or not they succeed will determine if President Joe Biden can achieve his agenda in the remaining two years of his first term.”

Make sure to stay up to date by subscribing to our State Of The Race Updates, and we will make sure that the Jewish Community is prepared for whatever votes come your way.

Articles from the Hill, Jewish Insider, and other Polling Information from Emerson College were used in the formulation of this piece.

May 16, 2022 The race for one of North Carolina’s seats in the United States Senate is shaping up to be a battle of significant importance as we enter the ‘22 election season –
