Rep. Lee was first elected in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022. Before joining the U.S. Congress, she served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 2019 to 2022. Rep. Lee was previously an organizer and led voter mobilization efforts. She co-founded UNITE, a grassroots organization seeking to support progressive candidates.
U.S. Representative Summer Lee has a history of making controversial remarks and has voted repeatedly against legislation supporting Israel. She was a member and was elected with the support of the antisemitic Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Rep. Lee voted against House Resolution 798 in November 2023, a resolution that condemned the support of terrorist organizations and antisemitism on college campuses.
In October 2023, in the aftermath of the Hamas terror attack in Israel on October 7, Rep. Lee voted against congressional bipartisan non-binding resolution H. Res. 771. The resolution stated that the House of Representatives “stands with Israel as it defends itself against the barbaric war launched by Hamas and other terrorists” and “reaffirms the United States’ commitment to Israel’s security” and it was passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.
Rep. Lee was criticized for sharing a social media post in which she claimed that Israel struck a Palestinian hospital — claims that were later on disputed by U.S. intelligence agencies. Lee later acknowledged the claim was in doubt.
In July 2023, Lee joined other members of the “Squad” in voting against a congressionalresolution highlighting that “the State of Israel is not a racist or apartheid state”, that Congress rejects “all forms of antisemitism and xenophobia”, and that “the United States will always be a staunch partner and supporter of Israel.”
