Addison “Joe” Wilson was born in 1947 and is currently serving as the U.S. Representative for South Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District.
Wilson was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in a special election in 2001. He was elected to a full term in 2002 and has been reelected since. Prior to joining Congress, Wilson served on the South Carolina Senate from 1985 to 2001. He has also served in the U.S. Army Reserve and in the South Carolina Army National Guard until he retired from military service in 2003 with the rank of Colonel. He is the Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East, North Africa, and International Terrorism.
Representative Wilson has been a strong ally of the Jewish community. Rep. Wilson is a staunch supporter of the State of Israel and has stated that he is glad to do anything he can to support the U.S.-Israel relationship.
Congressman Wilson led the official House delegation that attended the U.S. Embassy opening in Jerusalem.
Congressman Wilson opposes the discriminatory Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement that targets Israel.
He has supported military assistance to Israel to help the only democracy in the Middle East face the many challenges and malignant actors in the region. He co-authored in the U.S. House of Representatives the U.S.-Israel Cooperation Enhancement and Regional Security Act, which makes improvements to certain defense and security assistance provisions and authorizes assistance for Israel.
Rep. Wilson has been vocal about the need to address anti-Israel bias at the UN, especially as concerns the UN Human Rights Council and the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
