NEW YORK—Today, new Egyptian Ambassador to Israel, Hazem Khairat, arrived in Jerusalem, officially making him Cairo’s first emissary to Israel since 2012. In response, American Jewish Congress President Jack Rosen issued the following statement:
“This diplomatic exchange is a welcome sign of progress in strengthening the relationship between Israel and Egypt. I was pleased to learn of the positive meeting today between Ambassador Khairat and Israeli President Reuven Rivlin in Jerusalem. His words of peace and tolerance were very encouraging and are hopefully an indication that a stronger bond will develop between the two nations in the coming years.
“The American Jewish Congress has long advocated that the bond between Israel and Egypt is of the utmost importance and must be kept intact. Egypt has the ability to play a crucial role in brokering peace between Israelis and Palestinians, and to influence its fellow Arab nations in the Middle East in favor of diplomacy.”
