Press Release: American Jewish Congress Responds to France's Forthcoming Recognition of Palestine

Monday, February 1, 2016 - 9:50am

NEW YORK—In response to reports that France plans to unilaterally recognize Palestine, American Jewish Congress (AJCongress) President Jack Rosen issued the following statement:

"France’s threat of unilateral recognition of Palestine is a hollow and troubling measure that will do nothing to help Palestinians and Israelis move closer to a lasting peace. Progress toward a two-state solution fundamentally requires direct negotiations between the two parties. In the current climate, this type of ultimatum directed toward Israel merely incentivizes Palestinian leadership to maintain the status quo of incitement and violence. Only after Palestinians are held equally accountable for their role in prolonging the stalemate, will there be the opportunity to make the meaningful compromises necessary for Palestinian statehood.”
