NEW YORK—American Jewish Congress President Jack Rosen issued the following statement on the passing of Israeli leader President Shimon Peres:

“Today, we mourn the loss of an incredible Israeli leader and statesman, Shimon Peres (Z”L). During his lifetime, President Peres oversaw the building of Israel and her righteous place among the nations. No other countryman has held as many hats or roles for the Israeli people, serving as president, twice as prime minister, minister of foreign affairs, defense minister, finance minster, and transportation minister. He was the recipient of many well-deserved honors, among them the Nobel Peace Prize, U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom and U.S. Congressional Gold Medal.

“Peres was a man of the world, a peacemaker, and a visionary who endeavored tirelessly for the greater good, demonstrating time and time again against incredible odds, opposition and criticism, that peace is the only way, and indeed, it is achievable.

“As he once said, ‘You are only as great as the cause you serve.’

“We will miss you, dear friend. Thank you for your service. May your memory always be a blessing. We have in our hearts and prayers at this time President Peres’ family, friends and loved ones, whom the world joins in mourning him.”
